About the Authors

Samuel R. Rushforth

Sam Rushforth is dean emeritus of the College of Science & Health at Utah Valley University. A renowned expert in aquatic botany and wetland ecology, Rushforth has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers and books, including Van De Graaff’s Photographic Atlas for the Botany Laboratory. Prior to coming to UVU, Rushforth spent three decades as a faculty member at Brigham Young University. He has mentored more than three dozen graduate students who now work all over the world in various capacities.

During his 14 years at UVU, Rushforth saw the college grow exponentially: he hired more than 50 faculty and staff members, expanded the degree offerings and established the Master of Science in Nursing degree, one of the University’s three master degrees. In 2012, he and the college celebrated the opening of the new state-of-the-art 160,000 square foot science building.

Sam lives in Orem, UT with his wife.

Robert R. Robbins

Robert R. Robbins is a native of Des Moines, Iowa, and graduated from Iowa State University, Ames, with a B.S. in botany. He served in the U.S. Army and taught human anatomy and physiology in the Army Medical Field Service School, radiographic procedures section at Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. He went on to complete postdoctoral research on ragweed pollen prior to beginning his teaching career at the University of Illinois. He continued teaching at many top universities across the United States where he focused on his research and publishing articles and lab manuals. During his tenure teaching he focused on, introductory botany and biology, plant kingdom, introductory human anatomy and physiology, plant anatomy and morphology, plant cell biology, microtechnique and electron microscopy, plants and civilization, evolution, and biogeography.

He was the recipient of the AMOCO Foundation distinguished teacher award in 1984. In his free time, he enjoys plant photography, reading, music, attending opera and ballet, travel, hiking, and cross country skiing.

John L. Crawley

John spent his early years growing up in Southern California, where he took every opportunity to explore nature and the outdoors. He currently resides in Provo, Utah where he enjoys the proximity to the mountains, desert, and local rivers and lakes.

He received his degree in zoology from Brigham Young University in 1988. While working as a researcher for the National Forest Service and Utah Division of Wildlife Resources in the early 1990s, John was invited to work on his first project for Morton Publishing, A Photographic Atlas for the Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory. After completion of that title John started work on A Photographic Atlas for the Zoology Laboratory. To date John has completed eight titles with Morton Publishing.

John has spent much of his life observing nature and taking pictures. His photography has provided the opportunity for him to travel widely, allowing him to observe and learn about other cultures and lands. His photos have appeared in national ads, magazines, and numerous publications. He has worked for groups such as Delta Airlines, National Geographic, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, and many others. His projects with Morton Publishing have been a great fit for his passion for photography and the biological sciences.
