This book is designed to convey a fundamental understanding of the principles and practices involved in both the development and the production of compounded dosage forms by applying pharmaceutical principles.

The second edition brings a balance of material between pharmaceutics and compounding and adds a dozen new chapters. Many of the previous chapters have been expanded significantly to strengthen the applicable pharmaceutics information and have been updated to reflect the state-of-the-art of compounding. Relevant principles of both compounding and pharmaceutics are organizationally presented in a similar order so the material in the later chapters builds on content from the earlier chapters. The book is illustrated extensively. It serves as an excellent text for a pharmacy technician seeking advanced training, a pharmacy student currently enrolled in a School of Pharmacy, or a pharmacist developing a compounding service.

New to this title is Internet-based material. The online resource Pharmaceutics Library is an open website designed to enhance the presentation of material and increase students' preparation and learning. The site has been designated a Basic Resource for Pharmaceutical Education by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) since 1999. The materials available on the website include: (1) laboratory exercises that can be adapted for either pharmaceutics or compounding; (2) formulation records of compounds developed and used at the University of North Carolina School of Pharmacy; (3) instructional videos (all of the photo series in the book have a video clip counterpart); (4) instructional videos not found in the book; and (5) an interactive question bank for students to self-assess their own learning and understanding.
